Resumo
We analyzed self-rated health differences among individuals
in interracial unions in Brazil using data from the 2019 National Health Survey and multinomial logistic models. Our goals were to examine how a partner’s race relates to self-rated health and how this varies by gender. For women, having a White partner was the main differentiating factor, supporting the assimilation hypothesis. For men, the specific racial pairing mattered more, lending support to both assimilation and discrimination/stress hypotheses. While we cannot fully rule out selection effects, our findings highlight how a partner’s race influences health, with gender shaping these dynamics. This study advances understanding of racial dynamics in Brazil and emphasizes the need to consider both individual and partner race in health research.
