Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze the changes in age at first birth in Uruguay between 1978 and 2011. I estimated unconditional age- specific fertility rates for first birth to calculate the annual mean and standard deviation of age at first birth. Results show a small increase in the mean age (from 23.7 to 24.7) and the rise of the variance. Using conditional age-specific probabilities of first birth in 1985, 1996 and 2011, I show the emergence and consolidation of a bimodal pattern with peaks at ages 20 and 30-32. I also found some signals of a potential increase in the proportion of childless women at the end of their reproductive life.
