Abstract

The evolution of employment of elder adults in the period 2005-2014 is described herein, a period in which the social security coverage experienced a remarkable expansion. The level of labor segregation of elder adults increased between 2005 and 2010 and decreased between 2010 and 2014. In 2005, the segregation of elder males was very low and detected in managerial positions, street vendors, and occupations related to direction, repair and industrial and handicraft productions. In 2010, the segregation was even more remarkable in the same occupational groups, with the exception of occupations related to repairing. In 2014, the elder were still segregated in industrial and handicraft production, and they appear slightly overrepresented in occupations related to construction, health and sanitation, besides non-domestic cleaning services. In 2005 elder women were overrepresented in repairing occupations, gastronomic services, non-domestic cleaning services, management, and industrial and handicraft production. Between 2005 and 2010 the segregation of elder people increased in the occupations related to consumer goods, management, people’s care and attention and direction. Between 2010 and 2014, the levels of labor segregation decreased and overrepresentation in the occupations of repair, gastronomic services and non-domestic cleaning services can be remarked.
