Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze women and men repartnering trajectories after a breakdown. The data come from two retrospective surveys conducted in Uruguay during the 2000 decade. The work aims to contribute to answer the following questions: How often and how long after union dissolution or divorce people enter in a new conjugal relationship? Are there gender differences in the likelihood of repartnerning? What factors affect the likelihood of entering a new conjugal relationship? Results from survival and multivariate analisys show that the age at breakdown especially affects the probability of repartnering both among men and women. Counter–intuitively, having children does not impose barriers to the formation of a new union. Consequently, these results do not confirm the widespread notion that children are an obstacle to starting a new conjugal relationship. The general result of this study suggests that repartnering is associated with family oriented values.
