Abstract
The aim of this paper is to study birth cohort and social strata differences in age at first birth among women of 30-62 years of Montevideo and metropolitan area. Data from esf 2007-08 (n = 1097) is analyzed using survival tables and adjusting a discrete time logistic model. The results prove no significant differences in age at first birth among birth cohorts of women and that the shift towards postponement is observed among women from households with high educational attainment. In this regard, it shows an increase in the gap between women of different social strata in young cohorts, confirming the rising polarization in the timing of entry into motherhood outlined in other recent studies.
