Abstract
The research aims to establish whether the DIRESA (Dirección Regional de Salud) of residence is a contextual factor affecting child stunting and identify individual level factors associated with child stunting. It uses data from the National Survey of Demographic and Health (DHS, 2008) and multilevel logistic regression models to estimate the effect of DIRESA residence and individual level variables on the dependent variable child stunting. The results show first, that there is “DIRESA effect” on the likelihood of child stunting, which cannot be explained by differences in variables related to household characteristics, mothers or children measured at the individual level. Furthermore, the variables that represent characteristics of households, mothers and children are statistically associated with child stunting.
