Abstract
In Latin America, the odds amongst young people and the kind of transition to adult life are affected by inequality. In this study we compare the finishing of studies and the start of the working life in Buenos Aires, Lima and Mexico City, and we document the very different situations that the young ones experience in both transitions. We explore these differences by socioeconomic stratus and sex into and between cities. Although the young’s sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics are narrowly related to differences into cities, they do not explain the differences between cities. So, the institutional environments that rule the access to education and labour market contribute to explain the particular trends of the transition from school to work in each city.
