Abstract

The elaboration of new perspectives of the population phenomena, which includes their multiple structures and heterogeneities, are recurrent on the demography science, inclusive in Latin America. This activity is present in several dimensions of the discipline, passing through the critical discussion of neo-Malthusianism and the investment on empirical methods of analysis. In this field, the recent "Advanced Introduction to Demography", written by Wolfgang Lutz, brings important questions to the demographics of the region. Having as its pillar the proposition of a demography unified theory, elaborated by the joint comprehension of demographic metabolism, transition and dividend, Lutz systematizes the assumptions and potentials of a multidimensional perspective for the population phenomenon. In this review we point out some of the main points of the book, emphasizing the gains of such a theoretical proposal and the importance of human capital for demographic dynamics. Finally, some of its limitations and potential debates for Latin American demography are raised.
