Abstract

Urban mobility studies have gained relevance in Demography, considering daily movements that do not involve changing residences – carried out for work, study, health, shopping, and leisure. These patterns are influenced by the mode of transportation as well as by the characteristics of individuals and their homes. The article investigates how such patterns reveal vulnerabilities in certain groups by analyzing three aspects: travel time, work-related travel, and mode of transportation. Using data from PNAD (1988–2015) and the OD Surveys (2002 and 2012) in the RMBH, it was found that travel time significantly increases with age, while the period effect is almost negligible. Spatial analyses reveal a decentralization of flows, with Belo Horizonte losing part of its central role in labor attraction, and point to mobility inequities related to income, education, age, employment status, and gender.
