Abstract

This study compares the duration and risk of dissolution in four types of unions: marriages and cohabitation in the case of opposite-sex couples, and unions of same-sex couples of both men and women. Data on the first partnerships of 25,267 women aged 15-49, and 20,702 men aged 15-59 come from the 2015 Colombian Demographic Health Survey (DHS). Of the total of 45,969 first partnerships analyzed, 781 correspond to same-sex couples and 45,188 to opposite-sex couples. Event-history analyses showed that compared with marriage, different-sex cohabitating unions are the most likely to dissolve, followed by male same-sex unions and female same-sex unions respectively.
