Abstract

This study compares the demographic dynamics of the metropolitan communes and municipalities in the period 2001-2010, identifying differentials in terms of levels of dynamism, relevant components of growth and composition of recent migrants. Demographic data come from annual population projections by department and vital statistics; and the characterization of recent migrants is based on the 2010 population census. Municipalities and communes that stand out in the metropolitan context due to their population dynamism are identified, giving an account of the growth components that explain that particular growth; and then the profile of the population that recently arrived in the municipalities and communes with greater migratory growth is analyzed in relation to recent and ongoing urban processes.
